Cliff Diving World Cup Event at Abereiddy in Pembrokeshire !!

12 Professional cliff diving athletes may get the chance to sample the delights of the Pembrokeshire’s Blue Lagoon at Abereiddy as part of the world series cliff diving championships in 2012.

Red Bull, who organise the event have been in discussion with the Outdoor Charter group, National Trust, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, CCW and Pembrokeshire County Council to determine if the Blue Lagoon could be a new venue on the world circuit. If the event goes ahead it will be held on the 7th and 8th September.

Coasteering Staycation

We've teamed up with the guys at The Welcome Traveller Inn near Haverfordwest to offer you a Coasteering staycation.
One nights accommodation, breakfast, lunch and an evening meal plus a Half-Day Coasteering Experience for £80 per person. The Welcome Traveller was recently featured on Channel 5's The Hotel Inspector. This family run B&B is one of our favourites. It boasts a large restaurant/function room with bar, tv and a couple of relaxing sofa's, a separate bar with pool table etc, clean, well-appointed en-suite rooms. If that's not enough the food is super tasty, all cooked on-site by Geoff the Chef.
*Transport is not included, however the Welcome Traveller is easy to find and our Coasteering location is approx a 30 min drive up the coast.

Headland Farm - Self Catering and B&B

Last week we caught up with Monty at Headland Farm, located just up the road from us in Ambleston. Situated 30mins from popular beaches and overlooked by the Preseli hills.

Two lovely self catering holiday lets. One sleeps up to 6 guests, the second sleeps 4. Both kitchens are well appointed with fitted units including fridge, cooker & dish washer etc. Both have an open plan lounge/dining area. Bedrooms are quite spacious, there's ample parking outside, the farm also has storage for watersports kit and equipment.

For larger groups, Headland Farm also run a B&B at the same location.

RNLI’s top coastal safety tips ahead of Easter school break and bank holiday weekends

For those heading to the beach, the RNLI’s top five beach safety tips are:

Swim at a lifeguarded beach, between the red and yellow flags
Never use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas
Check tide times before you go
If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help
If you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard. If you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

For those going out to sea, the RNLI’s top sea safety tips are:

Wear a lifejacket
Get relevant training
Carry a means of calling for help
Check engine and fuel
Tell others where you are going
Check weather and tides

Review - 5:10 Canyoneer 2 Boots

We have long lamented that no-one makes gear specifically designed for Coasteering and whilst these boots were designed for Canyoning (a very similar activity), they are the closest we have found to a perfect boot for Coasteering.

Toughness
Well one pair of boots has lasted me two seasons already (an unheard of triumph) and are should see me through 2011 too. Used twice a day throughout the season, in various sea conditions, coming into contact with sharp rocks, barnacles and other shoe destroying terrain. They have endured admirably, even the buckle fasteners which i was dubious about, are like new.
The soles are starting to show some wear but have many adventures left in them. Tough sole rubber rises up at the back of the boot encasing the heel. Toes are protected by yet more rubber without compromising the flexibility.

Grip
Even on the slipperiest of rocky shore these manage to retain a good level of grip allowing you to "plant" yourself at likely slip areas to help clients across with super confidence. On normal rock/barnacles they are superb. In fact it is possible to stand quite firmly on near vertical slopes, the only limiting factor being your own calf strength. Gone are the days of our instructors slipping over, demonstrating how not to do it!

Comfort
Very comfortable boot, with the buckle fasteners ensuring a snug fit. For such a tough boot they still manage to retain a lot of flexibility and are very lightweight. The only negative for me is that if the boot is too big, your foot tends to slide about. When wearing said ill-fitting pair on a steep slab run one tends to stub a toe or toe inside the boot. After a week of stubbed toe's I replaced the boots for a smaller size, comfort was restored.

Functionality
Tying and untying laces with cold wet hands is a challenge. These boots are joyfully simple to fasten. A large padded flap with Velcro covers the ankle, clamped down with two wide straps with buckles, that's it - no laces or a bewildering array of straps!

Ankle support
Thick overlapping neoprene encases the ankle and comes up high enough (but not too high) to give excellent support, its a very reassuring feeling when perching on a sleep slippery rock to know your ankles can take it.

All in all an excellent boot that fulfills all the criteria. The 5:10 Canyoneer 2 retails at around £80 which we think is quite reasonable for such an awesome bit of kit.

*Top-tip: If you suffer from cold feet as I do its worth wearing a pair of neoprene socks inside the boot = toasty warm feet, even in winter!

The Pembrokeshire Bucket List

The 2007 film “The Bucket List” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman is centred on the lives of two terminally ill men. They conceived a list of things to do before they “kick the bucket”, cue lots of sky diving, motor cycle riding and laughing.
Well this film got us thinking – What has Pembrokeshire got that we can recommend are experienced before shuffling off this mortal coil? We limited ourselves to only choosing things that were invented in Pembrokeshire, are unique to Pembrokeshire or have become so synonymous with the county it’s hard to imagine Pembrokeshire without them.
This is our Pembrokeshire Bucket List:

Pembrokeshire Coast Path
Britain’s only coastal National Park and Wales’ oldest National Trail, the Pembrokeshire Coast national trail twists and turns its way around 200 miles of truly spectacular coastal scenery, don’t worry we’re not suggesting you walk the whole thing! With excellent summer time bus services and handy placed car parks it’s easy to just walk sections of the path. One of our favourites is the walk from Whitesands car park out to St Davids Head. Can you spot the fossilised submarine?

Coasteering
Why stand on the cliff path looking down when you can get up close and personal with often inaccessible stretches of Pembrokeshire’s stunning coastline.
Often described as extreme rock-pooling, Coasteering involves exploring a stretch of coastline in the zone where sea meets land. Scramble climb along the rocks, investigate the rocky shore, when passable dry routes run out, jump in and adventure swim across channels and bays. The Pembrokeshire coast has some awesome water features, including the “washing machine”, “Jacuzzi” and “toilet bowl”. Jump into a boiling turmoil of rocks and water or gently swirl in a turquoise blue pool. Not forgetting the low level belly flopping and higher cliff jumping.

Barafundle beach
After all that excitement perhaps something a little more relaxing.Barafundle beach was recently named the most beautiful beach in Britain and ranked in the top 10 beaches in the whole world. “A jewel of a beach, set between limestone cliffs and backed by dunes and woods. This secluded bay can only be reached by a cliff path walk from Stackpole Quay.” say the National Trust.

Snorkelling / diving St Brides
A small cove that benefits from clear water. Set in idyllic surroundings it is very easy to lose track of time here. We have spent many happy hours in the water, exploring the rocky shore. If you time it right you may be treated to a carpet of spider crabs. It has a sandy bottom, with a narrow mouth to the bay, with kelp starting at the mouth of the bay.

Dolphin Spotting
If you spend enough time on the coast in Pembrokeshire it’s almost certain you’ll spot one of these beautiful creatures. While surfing at Broad Haven we were treated to a mother and calf leaping from the waves, crossing the entire bay in this fashion. Why not support the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre Dolphin research by booking a “Dolphin Survey Boat Trip”.

Horse Riding on the beach
Nolton Stables have a large selection of horses and ponies and take pride in our ability to provide suitable mounts for needs as diverse as a young child, who is experiencing horse riding for the first time, through to those who have owned their own horse - and of course all those in between!
The 1.5 hour rides are our most popular because we can accommodate all abilities. The 1.5 hour beach ride goes to Druidston Haven. This peaceful and majestic natural beach is situated just over a mile from the Stables. Druidston is nationally renowned for its fascinating geological features and ‘Telly Tubby House’ (you will only understand what this means by coming and seeing!) When the tide is right out there can be up to a mile of sand and we are able to ride on it all year round.

St Davids Cathedral
1500 years of prayer and worship has left St Davids Cathedral with a definite atmosphere. In their own words “in this cathedral we strive to keep the faith which Christ and his apostles taught, to be joyful in our expression of gospel messages to the hundreds of thousands of visitors and pilgrims who come to this cathedral”. We recommend the guided tour to learn about how ‘cowboy builders’ are not a modern phenomenon and also remember local legend states that two trips to St Davids is the equivalent of 1 to Rome! Why not couple this visit with a stroll around Britain’s smallest city, St David’s itself.

Pembroke Castle
Idyllically set on the banks of the river estuary, this mighty fortress is largely intact, and its endless passages, tunnels and stairways are great fun to explore, plus there are super exhibitions, which tell the tale of its medieval life. Once the seat of a succession of major barons who played leading roles in shaping Britain's history, this historic showpiece is the birthplace of Henry Tudor, father to the infamous Henry VIII and grandfather of Elizabeth I.
Spend a day, and picnic in the beautifully kept grounds or from St. Anne's Bastion, enjoy views along the estuary while partaking of refreshments from the snack bar. Visit the Brass Rubbing Centre and quickly and easily, make an attractive souvenir. Complete your visit with a walk around the medieval town walls and millpond, and from the opposite bank of the river, view the castle in all its splendour, surrounded by this peaceful stretch of water.

Long a legend in Pembrokeshire “The Dyffryn Arms” aka “Bessy’s” is best described by the article “pint to pint” in the Daily Telegraph by Belinda Richardson.

Katy Holland: This year, tell the kids to take a running jump

I came across this article by Katy Holland in The Independant on Sunday this morning and thought it was super blogworthy!

Are We There Yet? May I suggest you go and jump off a cliff?

If you're in search of inspiration for a family adventure this year, may I suggest you go and jump off a cliff?

I don't mean to be rude, but it's fast becoming the activity for families looking for thrills – otherwise known as coasteering – and is taking place right now at rocky outlets across the country.

The theory is that hurling yourself en famille from precipices, sliding over slippery rocks and splashing around in freezing water is enjoyable – bonding, even. You simply explore the shore by whatever means necessary: jumping, swimming, slithering, abseiling and scrambling your way along otherwise inaccessible parts of some of the UK's most beautiful coastlines.

But before you come over all health and safety on me, it can be done only with qualified instructors, and with the proper safety gear: hard helmets, wetsuits, buoyancy aids, etc. Oh, and it's not usually suitable for children under 12, although some of the more family-friendly companies will organise special courses for youngsters. As my 14-year-old puts it: "You get to do everything you're not usually allowed to do."

Not surprising, then, that coasteering looks set to blow all those boring old kids' activities like sailing and surfing out of the water. Mark Handford, director or Snowdonia Adventures says youngsters are increasingly keen to give it a go. "Over the past year, we've noticed a rising number of families inquiring about our courses. It's an ideal activity for a short break for families."

After all, it's not every day you can tell the kids to take a running jump...

New Years Day Coasteering 31 Dec 2010

11am Fri 31st Dec 2010.
A couple of adventurous families decided to say goodbye to 2010 in style.

No rain, snow or wind made for great conditions. With winter steamer wetsuits, neoprene wetsuit gloves, hoods, socks and for some cag jackets we didn't feel the cold. I reckon the frequent hot chocolate stops kept us warm from the inside out.

The water looked super inviting, almost flat calm (the boys were caught out by the occasional wave), clear blue sea with stunning views. The added bonus was we had it all to ourselves.

We ventured out along the rocky shore, jumping swimming, scrambling, occassionaly falling (gravity can work against even the most determined Climber). Some braved the top jumps while others were happy to perfect their bomb technique.

Regenerate UK take on Pembrokeshire Coasteering

Super spring low tide this afternoon made for superb coasteering conditions.

The guys from Regenerate UK got stuck into the smaller jumps, getting a feel for falling

in style.

After a swim across the bay we headed through a cave and were met by a female seal. We spent a while watching her watching us watching her.....

The trip back through the cave had its ups and downs for some (literally) we timed it just right to catch some swell and almost body surfed out into the bay.

Following a spot of traversing, we worked our way up to the bigger cliff jumps. With a desent size swell running the guys had to time thier jump to be on the wave (smaller) or after it (bigger).

Another swim across the bay and we found ourselves marooned on a small island, pause for a pose, then off to the Blue Lagoon.

The top jump was a scream inducing 35ft. Having had our fill of falling with style we headed for the beach and a well earned coffee/ice cream from Matt's van.

Stag-tastic Coasteering this weekend!

The tooth fairy took the plunge.

Yes the tooth fairy can fly!

Stag groups are always great fun, especially when in costume.

3rd Troop Aberystwyth Scouts took to the Pembrokeshire coast last weekend for a spot of Coasteering.

After a gentle introduction many of the boys wanted a go at adventure swimming in the washing machine and toilet flush.

Having conquered the moderate swell, it was now time to test their butterflies on the cliff jumps.

Stunt jumps included an impressive 570' spin, flares and cannon ball bombs.

The grown ups got the opportunity to show off their belly flopping skills.

Well we've had a stunning couple of weeks here in Pembrokeshire.

With a variety of clients Coasteering, from families and couples to Stag parties and MOD groups.

19 Reg Royal Artillery got a taste for cliff jumping, while 22 Signal Regiment showed off their aquatic skills in the tumble drier and washing machine.

We were also visited by a number of Atlantic grey seals and moon jelly fish.

From exploring caves to poking around in rock pools, there's so much to see and do.

Don't forget folks, it's all about looking good!!

Typhoon Canyoning / Watersports Rock Boots..... THE VERDICT

The long awaited final review is here. After months of use the typhoon rock boot is given the thumbs up.
The first pair (from Santa) were going great until the sole of the right boot came off during a coaststeering session. Slightly dissapointed i returned the boots to Mike's Diving, they prompty replaced them with a new pair.
The second pair have been excellent.
They have been worn on more than 40 coasteering adventures, in a variety of conditions and at various locations in Pembrokeshire.

PRO's

If the correct size is worn they are snug fitting. This is great as they don't flop about on your feet, even when wet. Very handy when scramble climbing and sea level traversing.
Warm - due to the inbuilt neoprene wetsuit sock. I wear a second pair of socks inside the boots (i tend to get very cold feet, even in summer). This added layer keeps my feet toasty warm, even on chilly January coasteers.
The built in sock is higher up the ankle than the boot, the boot inself comes just above the ankle. This combination provides excellent support for the ankle. It also prevents the ankle bone being knocked.
The hard wearing sole has yet to show any wear. I'm guessing the first failed pair had a manufacturing fault. The soles curl up over the toe, protecting my little piggies from toe stubbing.
Lastly, i have found that one of the first things to go on any coasteering shoes are the laces. The Typhoon Rock Boot has a thick strong lace, again this is showing no signs of wear yet.

CON's

The sole falling off the first pair is an obvious one. However the second pair seem to be standing the test of time.
As the soles are super hard wearing, they are very slippery on wet rock. It took some getting used to as my previous pair of coasteering footwear (Keen Boulder Trainers) gave me spiderman-like grip. A fellow instructor wore the Typhoon Rock Boots twice and gave up on them, as he found them too slippy.
They are quite narrow which fits me fine, however if you take wide fitting shoes these may feel uncomfortable.

SO, overall an excellent choice at a reasonable price. Ensure you get the correct size, too big and they'll fill with water and flop about. If you suffer from cold feet, wear an extra pair of neoprene wetsuit socks. Celtic Quest score - 8/10

Wacky weekend Coasteering

After almost a month of beautiful Pembrokeshire sunshine, the rain and murk tried valiantly to make its presence felt this Saturday morning. No matter how much it tried it couldn't dampen the spirits of the Boden birthday group.

After what was referred to by a group member as a "memorable" evening of frivolity the previous night, the group arrives a little worse for wear and minus one lady who preferred to sleep off her hangover.

After kitting up with full winter thickness wetsuits, socks, gloves and hoods, plus buoyancy aid, helmet and trainers, it was time to get wet.

Many a scream and curse accompanied the first head to toe dunking

But pretty soon the kit started to work and the shocked faces disappeared

A morning of flips, bombs and flops followed, with some pent up issues being resolved during the trust falls.

A special mention should be made to Lisa for catching the wave of the day in the washing machine, after sea had what can only be described as an allergic reaction to her, spitting her out of the washing machine.

After completing some high jumps in the blue lagoon, it was a quick stop for a photo, then back to the van for tea and medals.

Took the dogs coaststeering

The Pembrokeshire weather has been stunning this week. We could'nt miss the opportunity to take the dogs out for a Coasteer.
Kato, our parsons terrier is mad for it. He takes a ball with him, mostly to muffle the excited barking!

Aluna (Rhodesian Ridgeback) wasn't impressed with the refreshing sea temperature. She'd be quite happy just toasting in the sun.

Having stayed dry (ish) all winter it was great to get them back into it. As you can see Aluna had a gentle start, while Kato just threw himself in. Almost like a seasoned professional telling her to get on with it.

The sun soon warmed them up, ready for the next plunge.

Kato's like a little torpedo in the water and Aluna is getting the hang of towing us.

They are both strong swimmers, however the buoyancy aid's mean they can swim for longer, they're also a lot more floaty when the seas a bit rough.

Having tried various brands and designs, i highly recommend the ones shown in the pics. The 'float coat' made by 'Ruffwear' can be bought direct (US) or through 'Canine Spirit' in the UK. They are a little pricey, but a worthwhile expense if your dog spends a lot of time in the water.

Easter Coasteering in the sun

Stunning weather today in Pembrokeshire.
After changing into our wetsuits the group were starting to cook.
A quick plunge soon cooled us off.
Low tide and small swell meant we were able explore further than normal.

Having scrambled, climbed, swum and jumped our way along the North Pembrokeshire coast we headed back to the Blue Lagoon for a couple of cliff jumps.

Despite driving through some pretty dreadful weather on our way to the beach today, the rain and hail stones stopped just as we arrived.

After about half an hour the Pembs sun showed its face.

There were some spectacular swells rolling in, which made for some exciting coastal features.

ITN say 'BBQ Summer' predicted

Remember when the met office said last summer was set to be one for BBQs?

It ended up being wet, windy and wild, then came the big Freeze which had been billed as a mild winter.

The government's forecasters have not been with it lately it seems.

But now a small firm of forecasters from Wales, called Positive Weather Solutions, who've correctly predicted the wet and the cold, are saying this summer will be the hottest on record.

They say average temperatues in June, July and August will beat even those of the 1976 heatwave when stand pipes and drought became a feature of daily life.

As a nation we're famous for talking about the weather and with the mercury set to soar beyond 38 degrees , lets hope this summer is becomes a hot topic of conversation.

Last weekend the boys took to the coast, steering a course along the stunning Pembrokeshire Coastal Park.

Despite arriving feeling a little fragile and rather chilly, they soon got into it.
After the initial refreshing splash our winter thickness wetsuits, hoods, socks and gloves started to do their job.

With just enough swell pushing in to make for an exciting adventure, we finished the session with cliff jumping in the lagoon.

Coasteering Footwear Review

Wetsuit Boots

Advantages:
Warm, as they are made of neoprene, if fitted correctly they keep your feet nice and warm.
Better for swimming as they don’t cause as much drag as trainers or boots.
Some say – better grip and control when scrambling and traversing. You can feel what’s under your feet.
Snug fit means your able to quickly fit a pair of fins over the top.
Protect your ankles from cuts and scrapes due to high neoprene.
Cheapish when compared with high spec watersports footwear.

Disadvantages:
If they don’t fit properly, they’ll fill with water causing a clown effect. Very heavy/floppy out of the water.
This extra water sloshing around won’t keep your feet warm.
Can be very slippery on seaweed and bare rocks.
As the sole is thin your feet will suffer when crossing sharp gravel and rocks.
The rubber soles don’t last long as they get warn down by barnacles and sharp rocks.
They don’t offer much support on the ankle.
The upper is soft, offering little protection from crush injuries.

Summary:
If going for this option ensure they fit properly, not too tight or they’ll be cold and uncomfortable.
Too big and they’ll fill with water, giving you cold clown feet and less control when scrambling and traversing.
Make sure they have a thick-ish rubber sole, firstly to delay wear and secondly to protect your feet from sharp rocks and gravel.

Old Trainers

Advantages:
If old or budget they can be cheaper than alternative footwear.
Depending on the tread design – they can be really grippy on rocks.
Again depending on design – they can protect feet from crush injuries.
Thick sole protects feet from sharp rocks and gravel.
If combined with wetsuit socks, they can be toasty warm as the fastening on trainers compresses the sock onto the foot giving a snug fit. The high ankle on the neoprene sock protects the ankle from cuts and scrapes.

Disadvantages:
No structural support on ankle.
Cold feet if warn without socks/ wetsuit socks.
Expensive if you go for high spec brands.
Depending on the material of the sole, they can be more slippery than alternative footwear.
Bulky trainers can slow swimming ability due to drag.
Some laves are prone to coming undone.
Larger designs like skate shoes and likely to fall off in rough water.

Summary:
Tennis shoes, plimsolls and deck shoes have a very flat sole with small tread. They’ll prove very slippery on bare rock and seaweed.
Skate shoes – as previously mentioned, are generally ill fitting and heavy when wet.
Some cross trainers have a thick material upper, although they may be lighter when wet the thinner upper will offer little protection for the top of your foot from crush injuries. They’ll also wear out faster.
Approach shoes are one of our favourites as the sole has ideal tread and are generally made of grippy rubber. Having used various models of karrimor, we have found the sole rubber to be very slippery on wet rock.
Various brands produce a watersports trainer.
Choose a pair that will shed water, yet protect the toe and heel –

'Keen' are a favourite of ours, they have survived 2 years (daily use), are mega comfy, super grippy rubber on the sole. This pair look like they should go in the bin, but they just keep on going. Laces in the photo are a replacement as old ones died.

Wetsuit socks are a worthwhile investment.

Beach Shoes

Advantages:
Price, they are available all over the place in the summer at affordable prices.
The rubber sole offers a fair amount of protection from sharp rocks and gravel.
Neoprene offers some warmth.

Disadvantages:
They are generally ill-fitting, fill with water, causing the floppy clown effect, this extra water swishing about can also make your feet cold. Again, due to the loose fit your feet tend to slide about inside making traversing and scrambling interesting to say the least.
Tend to fall off due to loose fit or pour fastenings.
As the upper material is fairly thin they offer little protection from crush injuries.
They sit very low on the ankle, leaving the ankle bone exposed to cuts and scrapes.
This low design also offers little ankle support.
Due to their cheap design they wear out very quickly.

Summary:
Be prepared to replace them often, have cold feet, little control when scrambling traversing and scraped ankles.

Canyoning Boots

As yet untested, Santa gave us some for Christmas so we’ll keep you posted.
We’ve had good reports from fellow instructors.

5-10 Canyoneer II

These are an expensive option when compared to the alternatives previously mentioned.
Fellow instructors who have bought/used them, give mixed feedback.

Typhoon Rock Boots

A much more affordable alternative.
We’ll be testing these out over the next couple of months and let you know how they do.

Take any child. Add a beach and a rugged coastline. You will see an awakening curiosity and thirst for exploration, stimulated by a playground of tidal reefs, rock pools and secret caves, and by the unknown world that lies beyond the next headland or nub of rock. If by chance that child grows to be a rock climber or mountaineer, the early fascination with the foreshore is likely to lead to more ambitious forays, whenever and wherever a rocky coast is within reach.

Coasteering is the art of sea level traversing. At simplest it involves scrambling along the base of sea cliffs and across occasional easy ground: boulder beaches, bedding planes and tiny sandy coves. At the upper limits there are long and serious expeditions along sheer rock walls, calling for highly developed skills and techniques, some of which go beyond those naturally acquired in a mountain or lowland crag environment. Coasteering at its most advanced requires an ability to read the sea, swell, tides and weather, alongside competence on rock and a readiness to take to salt water when an impassable section bars progress along terra firma.

Speculation and logic suggest that coasteering developed in the 19th century in parallel with the "gully era" of British mountaineering. This was the period when the eyes of British climbers were firmly fixed on the Alps and other high mountain ranges. The local hills were regarded as a training ground for better things, a place to develop fitness, confidence and technique. Where regular access to the mountains of Wales, the Lake District or Scotland was problematic, British alpinists sought other options. It is therefore hardly surprising that coasteering gained its first impetus in the West Country, far remote from mountain areas, but where sea cliffs offered an alternative training ground.

Coastal activity first entered the written record at the end of the 1800s, when climbers were venturing out of the gullies onto open faces. The exhilaration, and the attraction of "rock for rock's sake", was laying the foundation for rock climbing as a sport in its own right. In North Devon the "coasteers" of the day had explored sections of the local coastline, including Baggy Point, and in 1898 Dr. Tom Longstaff completed the sea level traverse of Baggy, together with the first ascent of Scrattling Crack. Tom Longstaff was already an experienced alpine climber. By the time of the First World War he was also an old Himalaya hand and had been selected as member of a planned two-stage expedition to Everest that was cancelled as a result of the outbreak of hostilities. He was to be appointed Medical Officer to the 1922 expedition that preceded the 1924 attempt on which Mallory and Irvine were lost. At this time he still held the record for the highest peak so far climbed and was one of a very few mountaineers to have broken through the 23,000 ft barrier.

But the generally acknowledged father of coasteering was another alpine activist, A. W. Andrews. As Longstaff was exploring the North Devon sea cliffs, Andrews was similarly occupied in the far west of Cornwall from a holiday base at Eagles Nest, some five miles west of St. Ives and close to the village of Zennor. Andrews' stated ambition was to traverse the whole coastline of Great Britain between high and low water marks. If he fell short of this achievement, he nonetheless covered considerable sections of the West Penwith coast around the turn of the century. Interestingly, he is also on record as having reconnoitered St. Davids Head around 1900, although there is no evidence of him having set foot on rock.

It was (and to some extent still is) the practice not to record and describe coasteering routes in the way that is usual for conventional rock climbs: this to preserve the sense of exploration. As a result much of Andrews' achievement is lost. But it is certain that this achievement was considerable - he was active in the development of Cornish climbing for many years and was instrumental in introducing George Mallory and others from the Pen y Pas group to West Penwith before the First World War. In 1923 he completed, solo, the traverse of Green Cormorant Ledge in the Great Zawn at Bosigran, a route that was not repeated until 1956 and was then graded Hard Very Severe. In 1938 he was instrumental in arranging the lease of the Bosigran Count House to the Climbers Club. As late as 1950 he collaborated with E.C. Pyatt on the production of that year's guide to the area. Pyatt, later author of 'A Climber in the West Country', was active in coastal exploration in the 1950s and 1960s.

From its early beginnings the momentum of coasteering was sustained by spasmodic bursts of intense activity. In the 1940s The Culm Coast between Bude and Clovelly was the scene of arduous coastal traverses. The establishment of the Commando Cliff Assault Wing at St. Ives brought new blood into the far west and renewed interest in the coastal cliffs. But the major step forward occurred in the 1960s, when sea level traversing moved up to a new dimension of technical difficulty. Early initiators included John Cleare and Rusty Baillie, who completed Traverse of the Gods at Swanage in 1963, regarded as Britain's first coastal traverse in the modern idiom. Cleare and Baillie were amongst a number of well known names with a particular enthusiasm for coasteering at a high standard. It is perhaps no coincidence that this activity occurred at a time when climbers in North Wales were looking away from the mountain crags for virgin ground, resulting in the discovery of Craig Gogarth and North Stack on the Anglesey coast. This recognition of the potential of hitherto disregarded rock was echoed in the West Country, especially on the limestone cliffs of Torbay. In 1967 Cleare and Baillie completed the first stage of the 7,700 ft Magical Mystery Tour, a complete sea level traverse of the Old Redoubt. This classic of the genre was completed in 1968 and 1969 by Peter Biven, who in those years traversed almost every inch of the Torbay coastline. Another Torbay enthusiast was Pat Littlejohn, who was to emerge as a leading light in the further development of coastal climbing in the West Country and South Wales, and a driving force of Pembrokeshire climbing.

It was in the 1960s that the potential of the Pembrokeshire sea cliffs was first recognised. In 1966 Colin Mortlock, taking time out from Clogwyn d'ur Arddu on the flanks of Snowdon, inspected the Pembrokeshire coast by canoe. Between 1966 and 1969 Mortlock established some 40-50 routes around St. Davids Head. During the same period a number of exploratory coastal traverses had been undertaken by John Cleare and others. The culmination came in 1970 with Cleare and Biven's one and a half mile Eldorado Traverse, from Newgale to Porthmynawyd, involving six Tyrolean traverses, two pendules and several zawn swims. In 1974 Pat Littlejohn began his long association with Pembrokeshire with a traverse of much of the cliff base of Penbwchdy, to the south of Strumble Head. These remote, extensive and intimidating cliffs rise to more than 300 ft in places. Access is not without problems, compounded by a high tidal range - during the 1974 excursion Littlejohn and his partner were forced to escape a rising tide by forcing the line of Terranova at Hard Very Severe.

As the 1970s progressed, attention in Pembrokeshire was fixed mainly on the steep limestone of the south coast, the most popular areas of which began to take on the claustrophobic ambience of Stanage Edge on a summer Sunday. Thirty years on this is still the case. But apart from the popular venues around St. Davids Head, the north coast remains a comparatively less traveled place where solitude and uncluttered appreciation of the magnificent coastal environment sound an echo in time, back to the first beginnings of coastal exploration. North Pembrokeshire climbing remains for the most part the preserve of small numbers of local and visiting enthusiasts, with only occasional and localised intrusion from the commercial activity industry.

This is fortunate. The north coast is ideally suited for coasteering and retains that sense of isolation that is an essential ingredient of the sport. Rocky headlands and cliff walls define every beach and cove. Absence of written descriptions maintains the sense of discovery. The footprints of those that have gone before are washed away by each successive tide. There are possibilities at every standard of difficulty, from easy scrambles mixed with cliff jumps and zawn swims (an old wet suit is recommended equipment) to roped expeditions of considerable technical difficulty over steep and serious terrain.

But perhaps the greatest enjoyment can still be found in solitary and serendipitous exploration, unencumbered by rope and hardware and the company of others. A summer evening with beaches and coast path emptied of visitors. Rough rock warm under hand, a calm transparent sea and the last heat of a sun westering towards the blue line of the horizon. The quiet lapping of ocean somewhere beneath the feet. Long lines of seabirds heading for their offshore resting grounds. And beyond, at the furthest reaches of imagination, the lost lands and islands of poetic myth.

Note that climbing restrictions are in place on many Pembrokeshire sea cliffs during the bird nesting season. Information is available from National Park and Tourist Information Centres.

Barrie Foster began rock climbing on the gritstone edges of the Peak District in the late 1950s and from then on climbed regularly and widely throughout Great Britain. During the 1960s he was an Expedition Training Team Leader with the Royal Air Force, with first ascents on rock in the German Sauerland and first winter ascents in the Sud Tyrol. In the late 1960s — early 1970s he lived close to AW Andrews’ base near Zennor and subsequently moved to South Somerset, within reach of the Dorset and the North and South Devon coasts. He moved to North Pembrokeshire in 1987.

What's the toughest predator you can think of..?

Lion..Tiger..Polar Bear..?

How about an animal that can survive in and out of water, drill through almost anything and has a cocktail of enzymes that can turn your insides to mush, which is then sucked up whilst your still alive.

Sounds like a horror movie right? Well this predator exists and its called the Dog Whelk (Nucella Lapillus).

These tough little carnivores spend their lives in what's known as the inter-tidal zone (the area of the rocky shore that is constantly either submerged or dry.

Their main prey are barnacles, muscles and winkles which they hunt constantly and without mercy.

When a dog whelk finds a juicy looking barnacle its tongue, coated with enzymes, bores through the tough outer shell. Once the enzymes have softened up the insides of its prey, it slowly sucks up the resulting soup. It can take up to three days for a dog whelk to feed on one barnacle.

As well as being tough predators, these guys know how to party. Every spring they congregate at the bottom of the shore for a massive orgy. The boys waggle their frankly impressive members at the girls, which drives them wild and prompts them to copulate. Incidentally the boys genitals are on the right side of the head.

The dog whelk is common to abundant on almost all rocky shores in Britain, as far west as Greenland, south as Gibraltar and north to the Arctic Circle.

Next time your thinking of tough predators, spare a thought for the Dog Whelk!

Lads birthday Coasteer

Rough and windy, but sunny day, perfect for a lads birthday coasteer.

The gang drove from Cardiff and the valleys to meet us at Abereiddy car-park.

A bit chilly, nervous and excited the lads got changed into wetsuits etc, listened to the safety brief and they were off....

A gentle start in the lagoon, traversing along the base of the cliff to the smaller jumps. So far so good.

On to the slide, 'Trigger' pulled off a stunning belly flop while attempting a dive, 10/10 for commitment.

We scramble through the eye in search of some rougher water. Belly flops are the way to go when entering the water in style and oh boy did these guys have style.

After a thorough washing in the various waves and pour-over's we head back to the lagoon to take on the BIG jumps.

On a rough day Abereiddy can be very popular with other activity centres. This was one of those days. Not a problem though, the Pembrokeshire spirit kicks in and we all work well together, jumping as high as 30ft under the watchful eye and guidance of loads of experienced guides.

The sun shone throughout taking the edge off the wind-chill.

Well done lads, a superb way to celebrate a birthday. Look out for our weary adventurers in Tenby tonight.

The stars of Pembrokeshire's tourist industry were out in force on Friday (October 16th) for the annual Pembrokeshire Tourism awards ceremony.

Tension mounted at the gala dinner presentation evening at Tenby De Valence Pavilion as short-listed finalists, their guests and category sponsors waited to learn the names of the eventual winners.

"Totaly stunned! As a new business, we were thrilled to be shortlisted as finalists, let alone winners. This should certainly help to raise the profile of Pembrokeshire Coasteering," said Cleopatra and Jordan, partners in Celtic Quest Coasteering.

"We were overwhelmed by the amount of entries and nominations received for the awards,"said Pembrokeshire Tourism's chief executive, Alison Belton. "The evening really showcased the quality and excellence we have within our tourism industry, and we hope it will also encourage and inspire other businesses to achieve."

Sea kayaking - The Witch's Caldron

Lib and I finally got a day off (at the same time!) so HAD to get out and do something. After a cup of tea and a look at weather forecasts, maps etc it was decided - sea kayaking somewhere new.

I had done coasteering to the witch's caldron but figured it would be less intrusive at this time of year (seal pupping season) to go in sea kayaks.
Gulp down the tea, pack the kit, load boats and we we're off.

A minor moment with my footrests, oh for some wd40, grrr.
A stunning September day, the big decision - do we wear cags. After five minutes of paddling we decide its just too hot, off comes the cag.

We ventured out of Ceibwr Bay and left along the coast. It wasn't long before we spotted an Atlantic grey seal popping its head up behind us. At one point Libby nearly bopped one on the head. It popped up right beside her boat, just as she was about to put in a paddle stroke.

All the secluded bays and big caves had seal pups on the beaches, with mother and bull seal watching over them.

We reached the cave entrance to the witch's caldron and quietly floated in. An awesome sight - seal pup sat on the pebbles with mum and dad chilling in the lagoon. Giving them a wide berth we sneak out the other side.

Not wanting to frighten mum and dad seal, we continued our journey along the coast, stopping for a spot of mackerel fishing along the way. No surprise we didn't catch a thing, I reckon the seals had got there first!

On our return journey we snuck into the caldron again. As the tide was coming in, this time the pup was in the lagoon playing with the seaweed. Mum and dad seal looked much more relaxed. Probably due to pup being in the water and not stranded on the beach (out of their protective reach).

After a short pause for pics, we ventured out and back to Ceibwr Bay. Having timed the tides just right, we had a short carry up the beach to the car.

I'm totally inspired and have already written my letter to Santa requesting a new sea kayak, fingers crossed I’ve been a good girl eh!

MIssing divers found after search

Celtic Quest were preparing to take part in a coastguard rescue training scanario yesterday with Preseli Venture. Barry (Pembs Coastguard) arrived onsite to inform us that they were just starting a search for two missing divers. Minutes later the Coastguard Helipcopter and various lifeboats were seen searching up and down the coastline.

"Two divers who went missing off the Pembrokeshire coast, sparking a major sea search, have been found.

Milford Haven Coastguard said the two men, both in their 50s, had not been seen since leaving a diveboat at Strumble Head, Pembrokeshire.
It is understood they are conscious and are currently in a rescue helicopter being taken to a hospital where there is a decompression chamber.
They were found by an RAF rescue helicopter.
The search, which started at 1730
BST, was taking place around
Strumble Head near Fishguard. Four lifeboats from Fishguard and St David's were searching the area, along with the helicopter.
St David's lifeboat spokesman Jim Phillips said the men had not been seen since at 1455 BST when they were dropped off by their diveboat.
The alarm was raised when the men failed to make contact with the vessel a few hours later."

Tiny seal pup encounter...

Out Coasteering the other day when we came across this little cutie.

Took a quick photo (well impressed with the zoom on the Pentax W60, we were stood approx 25m away!), then a detour to avoid disturbing the little chap.

Quite a few members of the public were concerned that it had been abandoned. This is usually not the case. Mother seal goes out to sea at low tide to feed and will return to feed her pup when the tide comes in.

This little guy can only be a day or so old as he's tiny, his eyes are still closed and he's not quite got that fluffy/chubby look about him.

We informed Pembs Outdoor Charter Group, who sent out notice to all the Outdoor Centres in Pembs advising them to keep a wide berth and reduce noise to a minimum if in the vicinity.

We'll monitor his progress and keep you posted.

It was baking hot, so a quick splash was just the right start.

Hobie Cat Dragoon Extreme!

Cleo's parents bought a Hobie Cat last year and having had two summer's of fun near Almeria, Spain, decided to bring it to Wales for us to play with.

Dad arrived yesterday morning, having towed the cat all the way from Spain. It had been stripped for the journey so, as you can imagine, rigging it took 'quite a while'. Jordan was at hand with the camera to catch some sunny pics of confused sailors!

Rigging the spinnaker chute was the most fun as none of us had ever sailed with one before. A quick look at the instructions and we were none the wiser. After a process of logical elimination we were ready for our first voyage - in Fishguard harbour!

A gentle onshore wind was perfect for getting a feel for it. Not sure we got the full hit of the fruit with three people on it!

Shortly after launching and tacking our way into the middle of the harbour Dad decided we needed to learn the capsize drill.

After a number of dunkings we were starting to look like we knew what we were doing. The audience that had gathered along the breakwater wall was beginning to thin out, obviously having had a good look they discovered that we were just practicing, so not worth watching. Think they were waiting for the Coastguard helicopter etc. No such luck.

Jordan had telephoned the coastguard prior to our Big Launch informing them where we were going, our expected return time and that we would be practicing capsizing and righting the cat, so if they did get any 999 calls from worried bystanders, it was all planned and we were OK.

The water was surprisingly warm. Handling was sluggish, not sure if it was lack of wind, number of people on board making us ride low in the water or just that its a cat (slightly larger than a Topper Dinghy).

I'll take the camera on our next adventure and get some pics of her on the water. Hopefully the dogs can come along too!

Swimming with Atlantic Grey Seals

More like avoiding.
At this time of year (autumn) these beautiful mammals can be seen near the Pembrokeshire coast. Big bull seals will be roaming the coast either searching for or protecting their mate. The female seals are looking for a suitable sheltered bay to have their pups.

In turn the pups are often seen on beaches and secluded coves.
The pups often look abandoned, well wishing members of the public want to rescue or merely get in for a closer look. They're not, female seals often leave their pup on a beach, especially at low tide, while they go off hunting for food.
Many grey seal pups end up abandoned after human interaction. Don't get too close, observe at a distance that doesn't disturb mum or pup.

Goodbye school hols, hello end of summer

Third time lucky with the Great North Run

A friend and colleague Jill Jones (Signum Media) has for the last two years taken part in the Great North Run half-marathon on behalf of worthy charities.

Now this is no mean feat as Jill, on her own admission, is no athlete! In fact, last year she was quite ill during the run but still finished!!

Her participation, therefore, is testament to her sheer guts and determination and the culmination of 12 months pounding the roads and hills of (a usually wet) Pembrokeshire countryside!

Coasteering then Ivebridge Spa

After yet another superb coasteer, Jordan and I booked an afternoon off to unwind in a local spa.
Ivy Bridge spa in Goodwick, Fishguard.

Talk about a change of pace....
We booked with Ivy Bridge at the Pembs County show. Having driven past it so often we figured it was high time we had a look.
Really easy to find, loads of customer parking.
A warm welcome in reception, we were taken through to a private changing room, supplied with gowns, towels, slippers etc. A very pleasant atmosphere throughout the complex.

We were then taken to the spa and after an introduction to all the bells and whistles, were told we had it all to ourselves for an hour! (Check out the virtual tour)
Firstly a roasting in the sauna, not Jordan's cup of tea it would appear. Then on to the steam room, much better. Thoroughly cooked we headed for the Jacuzzi, complementary drinks, relaxing mood lighting and music, candles etc. A total escape from our normal hectic lifestyle.

The hour flew by, before we knew it we were back in the real world.

We'll definitely be booking in for a massage or two on our next visit.

The weather had been pretty mixed throughout the show and today was no exception. Here's a short clip of the downpours that came and went throughout the day.

This didn't stop the visitors or traders from having a great day. Lots of wellies and a few brave umbrella's. The show's organisers were living up to their name, tractors spent all day doing the rounds with wood chippings - stopping the 'soggier' patches becoming mud baths.

Jordan and I took the time to try some of the food on offer. A oriental platter, strawberries and marshmallows dipped in Belgian chocolate fountain, choc and strawberry crepes and of course the GIANT Oggies.

Despite his best efforts, Jordan just couldn't win a teddy at the fair ground stalls so I settled for a pic with a gigantic puffin and an even bigger potato!

We're looking forward to next years show, which is promising to be bigger and better! Thinking about a water feature and maybe a tower, who knows :)

We're sooooo excited!

Last day at the Pembs County show tomorrow. Weather is looking 'unsettled'. Deffo a wellies and waterproofs day. Rain this afternoon didn't stop the thousands of visitors enjoying all sorts of activities from wine tasting to dog agility.
Its well worth a visit, with hundreds of bargains and loads of exciting stuff to see and do.

Small group today, Coasteering at Abereiddy.

Amidst loads of other groups and zillions of tourists we were able to pull off some awesome shapes on the lower freestyle jumps before heading out to the higher cliff jumping.

Another sunny Pembrokeshire afternoon. Again a super low tide so lots of exploring of rock pools. Still no spider crabs, we reckon they've all moved south to warmer waters :(

Today's adventure was with a mixed group at Abereiddi.
Low tide = loads of seaweed, but oodles of space in the through cave.

Jill, Norman and Stuart (Signum Media) joined us.

Jill's second Coasteer - a lot more confident this time, a definite water babe.
As you can see there was loads of seaweed, which made getting out of the water interesting.

Unfortunately Norman missed the first Coasteer, but more than made up for it today with bags of enthusiasm. Especially with the medium headland jump!

Stuart appeared to take it all in his stride. With some awesome freestyle jumps, it's all about looking good.

A great time was had by all, especially the two little people Fin & Rees. Energiser bunny doesn't even come close.

Pembrokeshire's RNLI lifeguards back beach bands scheme

Local lifeguards are backing a scheme to keep children safe at the seaside this summer.

Last summer in Pembrokeshire alone, there were 43 reports of missing children received by the RNLI lifeguards, and 526 across the UK. The RNLI and coastguards have teamed up to try and ease the problem by offering brightly coloured wristbands for children to wear while at the beach. Details of how to contact the coastguard are included on each wristband and parents can add their own phone number. The wristbands are available for collection at any lifeguard beach unit.

Chris Rigby, RNLI area lifeguard supervisor in Pembrokeshire, said: “Missing children is a common issue on our beaches. It is fairly easy to lose sight of your child, particularly on a busy day in the middle of the summer. “We advise that any parents using a lifeguarded beach should visit the RNLI lifeguard beach unit to collect the wristbands for their children.”

Milford Haven coastguard said missing children made up a significant amount of their call-outs, particularly during the summer.

What to do on a day off.....take our dogs coasteering!

We awoke to bright sunshine and were spoilt for choice with what to do.
The unanimous decision was to take Aluna (Rhodesian Ridgeback) & Kato (Parsons Terrier) coasteering.

Where to go?? On a beautiful day like this everywhere would be packed so we decided to go out of Aberbach.
We packed our kit and the dogs into the van and were off.
Kato was like a bag of monkeys all the way there, sooooo excited. Aluna on the other hand took it all in her stride.

We remembered to take a bark-muffling device (tennis ball) with us. Kato gets sooooo excited and barks all the way round.

Aluna did amazingly well, it was her first proper coasteer!
When we got in and swam she would back-track and find another route, thus avoiding the water. When she did swim, it was like a race between both the dogs. We could barely keep up. Wearing their Ruffwear Floatcoat's they could paddle along for ages.

Aluna has yet to find her feet when it comes to rock-hopping. It's almost like she throws her weight in one direction and her legs just try to keep up.

Coastguard tombstoning ad aims for safer Pembrokeshire coast

We found this article in the western telegraph and felt it worth repeating.....

A radio advert warning against the dangers of tombstoning will be broadcast over the Pembrokeshire airwaves this summer. 

Coastguards have already been called to two tombstoning incidents this season: In June rescue teams evacuated a 23-year-old tourist from the base of Saundersfoot harbour wall. 

The man, on holiday from Ebbw Vale, had decided to leap from the top, assuming there was sufficient water beneath to break his fall. 

In fact the tide was out and the actual depth of water was around 2 inches. He sustained suspected fractures to both legs and feet and was taken to Withybush Hospital. 

Tenby coastguard was called out again to a tombstoning incident. This time a group of eight young people were spotted jumping 60 - 70 feet off cliffs into shallow water between Castle Hill and the Fort,Tenby A police unit was also dispatched to the incident. 

Further afield tombstoning has caused several deaths and several serious injuries. 

Nick Biddlecombe, is permanently wheelchair bound after a devastating spinal injury sustained while tombstoning. 

“We’d all go down there, but none of us had the intention of jumping; seeing who could prove that they were the bigger man really he said. 

"I was bet 50p and a cigarette that I wouldn’t jump first, so I did. 

“I remember waking up under the water, I tried to move my arms and my legs to swim up and I couldn’t” 

The coastguard radio filler is part of an ongoing campaign advising against the "madness of  tombstoning" following a spate of deaths from the activity in the last few years.   “Sadly, we are dealing with deaths or injuries from this activity on a regular basis and we’d like to see far fewer devastated families," said coastguard sector manager Ross Greenhill. 

"The campaign aims to raise awareness amongst young people about the risks involved in tombstoning. Some of the people who have been badly injured tell us they just didn’t know how dangerous it can be.”

Someone must have packed our Pembrokeshire sun. It's been indecisively raining for days :(
Despite the winding wet morning, Lucy & Karen were well up for their second coasteer this week.
They came out with us on Tuesday, but sea conditions were huge so we didn't get very far. They booked another session for today and boy were they glad they did.

Still pretty big, but FUN big, we ventured out along the headland.
Having explained that it was all about timing, the girls gradually got the hang of it - looking a little more like 'a duck to water' with each wave.
Karen volunteered to follow Cleo into the washing machine and got the full spin cycle. Lucy however timed it in between sets and gently drifted out to flatter water.
Being low tide, the lagoon jumps were challenging. Their first coasteer was on a high tide, so the step up to higher jumps was ideal.
Another wicked session!!

Squaddie Madness

We took a bunch of Royal Anglian Regt lads out this afternoon. What a giggle.....

Before

They seemed quietly excited, some looked nervous, others were obviously taking it all in their stride.

During

A nice little swell was pushing in, so we were able to utilise all our favourite water features including the "washing machine" and "tunble drier". We started out gently, small jumps, a little moving water and some easy traversing.

As we headed further out, conditions got bigger, as did the boys appetite for adventure. Jumping at increasing heights enroute, we made it to the headland. A quick spin in the "tumble drier" then over to the big jump.

All the lads loved it and were thirsty for more.
We headed back in to the blue lagoon and introduced the gang to the tower jumps.

After

Thoroughly exhausted and still buzzing, the group headed back to the carpark for a well earned coffee from the icecream van.

Well done guys, we haven't laughed that much in ages.

Rough Seas

Despite roughs seas and a strong wind, much fun was had by all in this mornings session.
Coasteering at Abereiddi Bay.
We were the first centre to arrive, so had our pick of routes and play spots.
Timing is key in big swell and the group mastered it brilliantly.

A very high tide made for some easy jumps, even the huge corner jump was do-able.
Bright sunshine and warm seas made for a enjoyable session.

Jordan tried his "what noise does a fish make?" but Janet was having none of it and dunked him instead.

We couldn't go for the farthest headland, due to big swell. A challenging traverse around the lagoon, some high jumps and a few sporty waves on the outside were more than enough adventure.

24 Days Old

Needless to say she's blossomed into a beautiful 'beast', lol. Now 18 months, she still thinks she's that cute little pup. Gets all confused when we notice her "sneaking" up on the sofa, lol.

She likes nothing more than tormenting our 4yr old Terrier!

Phew long day today

Three sessions at Stackpole Quay.
An excellent group from Lord Wandsworth College CCF.
This morning had us scrambling at low tide, spotting spider crabs and porpoise.
This afternoon, even lower tide, exploring caves that are usually under many feet of water.
Evening session, high tide, jump-tastic.
Porpoise stayed around all day. The cadets were convinced they were dolphins but i don't think so.
Didn't rain all day despite reports of heavy downpours elsewhere!

Coasteering in the rain...

How much can it rain in one morning, LOTS is todays answer.

Jordan and I got to St Davids early and thought we'd put the kettle on while waiting for the group...... The skies opened, bucket loads of rain, but not cold.
The girls pitched up, a little soggy and not too sure if we would go ahead.
They had spent the week backpacking and didn't look inspired with the idea of getting even wetter.

Not to worry, we said, you'll get wet anyway!

We get changed, wetsuit, buoyancy aid etc and walk down to St Non's. The rain didn't let up until we jumped in the sea.
It was like someone turned off the tap... the sun came out, patches of blue sky.

After the initial jump, brrrrrrr, "actually it's not that cold"... we moved on to the toilet bowl, which was working briliantly today.

Thoroughly flushed we explored the coast, jumping, swimming, stopping for hot chocolate, until we reached Jumps Bay. One of the girls works as an engineer on wind farms, so we figured she'd have no problems with the height of the bigger jumps...

Wrong.... they were just high enough to challenge their limits. The whole group gradually made their way up to the high jump.

A little soggy and quite exhausted we strolled back to the van.
The girls reckoned they would be booking again as a suprise for thier dad's 50th birthday.

An awesome session was had by all.

Sunshine & showers

We've just spent the week working with Adventure Beyond.
Year 9 Camp, 100 children staying at Pwll Caerog c/o Celtic Camping.
With various groups rotating around a program of Coasteering, sea kayaking, surfing, raft building, climbing & abeiling and Open canoeing & beach bivvi.

Monday morning had us sorting out kit, accomodation etc.
That afternoon Cleo took a group out coasteering.
Tuesday was a raft building and coasteering challenge.
Wednesday, double surfing for Cleo, with the groups swapping between surfing and climbing at lunchtime, Wow what a hot day that was.
Thursday was a little damp. Most of the group were on water activities. The mornings coasteering group were able to get changed into wetsuits etc at the farm and walk out to abereiddi. After an awesome session, they were quite happy to walk back in the rain.
Friday was clear up and go home day.

Phew what a busy week.
Pembrokeshire summer at its best!
